We are committed to inclusive excellence and are taking steps to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion and foster a greater sense of belonging. In 2021, the Inclusive Excellence Advisory Group was established to serve as a think tank for improving DEI efforts. Membership includes department faculty, staff, and grad student representatives.
Recent and Ongoing Efforts:
- Developed vision statement
- Host Culture Talks, monthly coffee socials, International Food Night, and seasonal get-togethers
- Share resources and build community through weekly department newsletters, bulletin board, and website
- Implement orientation for incoming grad students to provide welcome, establish support system, and share campus resources
- Organize presentations and trainings
- Recognize department members with Green Thumb and Service awards
- Improve accessibility of Extension materials (e.g., closed captioning and translations)
- Incorporate DEI into recruitment and hiring practices
- Facilitate connections with Extension Educator Affiliate Program
- Attend events supporting underrepresented groups on campus (e.g., Define American Banquet and LGBTQA+ History Month Dinner)
- Deploy climate survey every two years to assess progress and adjust goals
