Dr. Funnell-Harris has over 35 years of experience in plant resistance and fungal pathogens that infect grain and other crops. Her broad training, creativity, and flexibility have been critical in delineating important aspects of plant-fungal interactions. Her expertise in the interactions of stalk pathogens and abiotic stresses in sorghum resulted in a $1,000,000 grant from NIFA’s Plant Feedstocks Genomics for Bioenergy program. Her expertise in grain pathogens and biological control microorganisms earned her funding from the ARS programs, U.S. Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative (USWBSI) and Antimicrobial Resistance and Alternatives to Antibiotics (AMR/ATA) to support her important studies on both sorghum and wheat. Regard for Dr. Funnell-Harris is evidenced by Senior Editorship for Plant Disease, the most highly regarded journal for applied plant pathology. Dr. Funnell-Harris is also greatly respected by The American Phytopathological Society (APS), the major society for plant pathologists worldwide; she has served as President of the North Central Division and is a member of four APS committees, two of which she has served as chair. Dr. Funnell-Harris has co-authored several review articles and has been invited to present her work at various universities in the U.S. and Australia.
