Jerry Weiland visits PLPT
Dr. Jerry Weiland visited the Department of Plant Pathology November 6 as a invited 2017 Fall Seminar Series speaker. Dr. Weiland is a Research Plant Pathologist in the USDA/ARS Horticultural Crops Research Unit, Oregon State University at Corvallis.
His seminar was titled "Diversity Matters: Exploring the consequences of Pythium diversity in forest nurseries." Weiland met with faculty and students during his stay for further discussion during meals and appointments.

USDA funded the proposal “Optimizing Cropping Systems for Resilience to Stress: The Role of Maturity Group Selection and Cover Crops on Yield, Weeds, Insects and Microbes” that is a collaborative project between C. Proctor, M. Drewnoski, R. Elmore, S. Everhart, A. McMechan, J. Parsons, D. Redfearn and R. Werle. Amount: $461,187.

Thomas Miorini joins the Giesler lab
Thomas Miorini joined the lab of Dr. Loren Giesler as a postdoctoral researcher. He's studying the effect of fungicides on control of sclerotinia stem rot in soybean. In the past 4 years, during his Ph.D. and as a postdoc, he worked with Drs. Everhart and Steadman.
Kyle Broderick, New Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic Coordinator
On April 1, Kyle Broderick became coordinator of the Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic after working as an extension technologist in a University of Nebraska soybean pathology lab for six years. Most of his research focused on management of soybean cyst nematode using resistant varieties and seed treatments and conveying the information to the public through field days and demonstration sites.

Nikita Gambhir - UNL 2017 Spring Research Fair award for her poster and Donald E. Munnecke Student Travel Award from the American Phytopathological Society for an essay she wrote to propose a special session on mechanisms of host plant resistance to necrotrophic pathogens. These funds will support her trips to the North Central and National APS meetings.
