Gerard Adams

Professor Emeritus
  • Ph.D., University of California - Davis, 1981
  • M.S., University of California - Davis, 1975

Dr. Adams' area of focus has been applied and classical mycology, forest pathology, diseases of landscape trees, nursery and ornamental crops. His most recent research direction involves climate related stresses on trees that initiate new disease situations. As part of this research he is compiling tree-ring chronologies along ~500 mile transects of tree species suitable for conditions in the Great Plains, including urban environmental conditions. The chronologies will be used in constructing predictive models of growth response with climate change. He has been actively engaged with U.S. Forest Service projects on forest health and protection in Alaska, the Rocky Mountains, the Lake States, and the Plain States. This research has been instrumental in elucidating the causes of Alder dieback and mortality, Ash decline, White pine branch dieback, leaf scorch in hardwoods, and Western Hemlock canker. Biosurvey studies of the root rotting pathogens Phytophthora and Pythium led to discovery of Phytophthora alni in America, a species that caused widespread mortality of alder throughout Western Europe. He led efforts in surveying the extent and impact of Oak wilt in Michigan, Bacterial leaf scorch in 9 states, Ash yellows, Dogwood anthracnose and Alder canker and root rot. Recent research on the abiotic causes of leaf scorch in the urban forest has involved studies of the influences of planting depth, root grafting, hydraulic conductivity, microelement nutrition, soil compaction, and photosynthetic efficiency. Past research included development of species-specific molecular probes for detecting pathogenic fungi in symptomless conifer foliage which improved management of disease in Christmas tree and forest nurseries and plantations. He has conducted important research on the taxonomy of fungi that cause canker diseases on a wide range of trees, and much of the knowledge on Cytospora canker has been published in his book. Dr. Adams' primary passion continues to be understanding fungal biology and genetics in pathogens and is illustrated by the advanced course he taught for many years which has been a highly successful and well-received graduate course in mycology. He is an active member of the Mycological Society of America and served this society in a number of roles.
