If you are interested in making a difference in the world of plant health and helping conquer plant diseases, our Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is the place for you!

Here you will find state of the art research, teaching, and extension/outreach programs in a diverse and friendly professional community.

Dr. James R. Steadman

Professor and Department Head

We offer interdisciplinary programs in

  • Plant Protection leading to a B.S. degree in Plant Protection Sciences and to a Master of Agriculture.
  • Our M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are offered through the School of Biological Sciences and as a specialty in the Agronomy and Horticulture Department. Advanced degrees are available under the mentorship of faculty conducting research, teaching and extension programming in areas such as
    • host-pathogen interactions,
    • molecular mechanisms of pathogens,
    • development of modern diagnostic tools and mechanisms for disease surveillance,
    • soil-borne diseases,
    • microbial ecology,
    • biocontrol,
    • integrated plant disease management,
    • pathogen population dynamics,
    • experience in extension.

Our programs of study are designed to fit student interests and career demands for the 21st century. For example, extension/outreach or teaching emphasis is available to any student.

Pathogen studies in our department involve major model plants such as Arabidopsis, tobacco and algae, as well as economically and nutritionally important crop plants including corn, dry beans, wheat, soybeans, sorghum, and sugar beets. We also have ongoing research on the fast growing area of disease management of turfgrasses. Beneficial microbes associated with some of these plants are also subjects of research as are pathogens that infect tropical plants and those that infect across kingdoms.

Our students have found employment in extension education, state agency, federal agency research and administration, industry program manager, and research, teaching and extension in academia.

We invite you to come study with award-winning, productive faculty mentors who are recognized as regional, national and international leaders in plant pathology and turn your professional aspirations into reality!
